Active/Passive Voice Adventure: Intermediate Learners
Quick Guide to Active and Passive Voice
Active and passive voice show who’s doing the action—or who’s getting it done. Here’s the scoop before you dive in!
- Active Voice: The subject does the action. “She paints the house.” (She’s the painter!)
- Passive Voice: The subject receives the action. “The house is painted by her.” (The house gets the paint!)
- Present Passive: Happening now with “is/are + past participle.” “Books are read daily.”
- Past Passive: Happened before with “was/were + past participle.” “The cake was eaten yesterday.”
- Passive with Modals: Uses “modal + be + past participle.” “The room must be cleaned.” (It’s a must!)
- Other Tenses: Passive shifts with tense. “The car will be fixed.” (Future) or “The song has been sung.” (Present perfect).
Tip: Look for “by” or focus on who’s acting vs. who’s receiving. Ready? Let’s roll with 200 challenges!
