Modal verbs are special helpers in English that show ability, permission, advice, or need. Here’s a fast rundown before you jump into the quiz!
- Can: Shows ability or permission now. “I can jump high!” (I’m able to do it.)
- Could: Past ability or polite permission. “I could run fast as a kid.” (I did it before.)
- May: Formal permission or possibility. “You may leave early.” (You’re allowed!)
- Might: Something could happen, but it’s unsure. “It might rain later.” (Maybe!)
- Should: Good advice or a suggestion. “You should wear a coat.” (It’s smart!)
- Must: A strong rule or need. “You must stop now!” (No choice!)
- Shall: A formal plan or promise (often with “we”). “We shall meet at 5.” (It’s set!)
- Will: A definite plan or future fact. “I will call you tonight.” (I promise!)
- Would: Imaginary situations or polite offers. “I would help if I could.” (If only!)
- Have to: Something you must do because of rules. “I have to finish my homework.” (It’s required!)
- Need to: A practical necessity. “You need to drink water.” (Your body says so!)
- Ought to: A moral or wise choice. “You ought to say sorry.” (It’s the right thing!)
