Scene 1 · Exam Week in Hat Yai

Nadia is a first-year nursing student in Hat Yai. Right now she for her first big exam. She has books on her desk but not much time. Her mother lives in Pattani, and she calls every night to ask about her studies.

Yesterday Nadia breakfast because she woke up late. Her friend Ploy said, “You eat something before class, or you won’t think clearly.” In the end, the exam was not as difficult Nadia expected.

Scene 2 · The First Night Shift

Level band 2 · Intermediate (B1)

Nadia on the night shift since last Monday. On her third night, she was checking a patient’s temperature when an alarm at the end of the corridor. The senior nurse was busy with another patient, so Nadia decide quickly what to do.

“If I more experience, I would feel calmer,” she thought. She ran to Room 12, an old man was trying to climb out of bed. She helped him back safely and stayed with him until he slept. Afterwards she felt but proud.

Scene 3 · The Incident Report

Level band 3 · High Intermediate (B2)

Incident report · Ward 4 · Room 12

At 02:15 the patient by the night staff when he tried to leave his bed without help. When I reached the room, I asked him where . He said he wanted to go home to feed his cat.

Since that night, a second nurse checks every high-risk patient each hour someone tries to get up alone. In my view, the bed rails raised before the patient fell asleep. We have also had the alarm system by a technician. Many elderly patients are simply not used to in a strange bed, and we should plan for this.

Scene 4 · A Talk on Patient Dignity

Level band 4 · Advanced (C1)

Three years later, Nadia spoke at a national nursing conference.

“Only when I sat with that patient in Room 12 that he was afraid, not confused. If no one had listened to him that night, he still be in hospital today. It is high time hospitals patients as partners rather than problems.

Our experience shows that the more we explain, frightened patients become. When we finally phoned his neighbour about the cat, his relief that he cried. I therefore propose a system every patient can ask for a nurse who speaks their own language.”
