How it works. Each set is one episode of a continuing story set at the front desk of the Riverside Hostel in Bangkok, where a young receptionist named Ning meets travelers from around the world. Every episode practices the grammar people need for one real purpose, such as asking for help, giving directions, making suggestions, or apologizing. Read the whole conversation first, then choose. Grammar in Conversation · Giving Advice
Each gap is part of a real conversation. Choose the option that is grammatically correct and natural in the situation. Notice who is speaking and what they want to do: ask, offer, apologize, suggest, or explain.
Aiko: Ning, I want to try real Thai street food tonight. What I order?
Ning: You try pad kra pao. It’s my favorite.
Pedro: You also try som tam, but ask for less chili.
Aiko: Is it very spicy? I’m not used to spicy food.
Ning: It can be. You’d better for ‘phet nit noi’. It means a little spicy.
Pedro: And you’d better not the water from the tap.
Aiko: What about the night market by the river? Is it worth ?
Ning: Definitely. But you go on an empty stomach!
Pedro: If I you, I’d start with the mango sticky rice stall.
Aiko: What you recommend for dessert?
Pedro: Try the coconut ice cream. It’s the best I’ve ever .
Ning: It’s a good idea small portions, so you can try more.
Aiko: How much I expect to pay?
Ning: Most dishes between fifty and eighty baht, and you have to tip at street stalls.
Aiko: I’m a bit nervous. I’ve never food from a street stall before.
Ning: Don’t worry. Just where the local people eat. If a stall busy, the food is usually fresh.
Aiko: That’s advice. Thank you both!
