Overview

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) evaluates non-native English speakers’ proficiency in understanding and using English in academic settings. It assesses integrated skills needed for successful communication in university-level environments.

The test consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing, delivered in the TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) format.

1. Reading (35-39 minutes)

Scope: Measures the ability to understand and analyze academic texts.

  • Number of Questions: 20 questions (split across multiple passages).
  • Text Length: 700-900 words per passage.
  • Tasks:
    • Identify the main idea, purpose, and key details.
    • Understand vocabulary in context.
    • Infer meanings and recognize rhetorical devices.
    • Synthesize information across paragraphs.

2. Listening (36-41 minutes)

Scope: Evaluates comprehension of conversations and lectures in academic and casual contexts.

  • Number of Questions: 28 questions.
  • Content: Includes:
    • 3-4 academic lectures (~5 minutes each).
    • 2-3 conversations (~3 minutes each).
  • Tasks:
    • Identify main ideas and supporting details.
    • Recognize speaker’s attitude and implied meanings.
    • Follow sequences of information or events.

3. Speaking (16 minutes)

Scope: Assesses the ability to communicate effectively in academic contexts.

  • Number of Tasks: 4 speaking tasks.
  • Tasks:
    • 1 Independent Task: Express opinions or preferences based on personal experience.
    • 3 Integrated Tasks:
      • Respond to a lecture or conversation.
      • Synthesize information from reading and listening passages.

4. Writing (29 minutes)

Scope: Tests academic writing skills, focusing on clarity and logic.

  • Number of Tasks: 2 writing tasks.
  • Tasks:
    • Integrated Task (20 minutes):
      • Read a passage (~250 words), listen to a lecture (~2 minutes), and write a response (~150-225 words).
      • Compare and contrast information from both sources.
    • Independent Task (10 minutes):
      • Write a short essay (~250 words) expressing and justifying opinions on a topic.

  • Total Test Time: ~1 hour and 56 minutes.
  • Scoring: Sections are scored 0-30; the total score ranges 0-120.
  • Integrated Skills: Speaking and writing sections combine reading, listening, and writing.
