Nok’s Second Year · Day 38: A Group Project and the Art of Honest Graphs

20 items · 15 minutes · Complete the Words · Read in Daily Life · Read an Academic Passage · a daily workout in the TOEFL iBT Reading format introduced in January 2026

How it works. This is a short daily workout in the TOEFL iBT Reading format used since January 2026. In fifteen minutes you complete damaged words in an academic text, read two everyday texts, and read a short academic passage. Every part follows one day in the second year of Nok, a Thai student at an American university, so the same words and ideas come back in different forms. A few minutes each day builds reading speed and vocabulary far better than one long session a week. Answer every item, then press Check My Score to see why each answer is right.

Part 1 · Complete the Words (10 items)

Part 1A · Research Methods 250 reading: How graphs can mislead

Nok’s group is preparing its final project for Research Methods 250. This week’s reading is about presenting data honestly. Complete the words in the reading. The first half of each damaged word is given; type the missing letters.

Graphs can make information to understand, but they can also . One common trick is to start the vertical at a number other zero. A small , such as from 50 to 52, can then enormous. Another is to choose a time that supports a particular while ignoring that would tell a different .

Part 2 · Read in Daily Life (5 items)

Part 2A · Final project instructions

Nok reads the instructions for her final project. Read them and answer the questions.

RESEARCH METHODS 250: FINAL PROJECT

Work in groups of three. Collect data from at least 40 participants on a question of your choice, after your plan has been approved by your lab instructor. Present your results in a 10-minute talk with no more than six slides. Every graph must have labeled axes and a clear title. Due: the last week of classes.

Part 2B · The group chat

Read the everyday text and answer the questions.

Leo: Look at my graph! Sleep hours versus GPA. The bars look totally different!

Nok: Wait, your y-axis starts at 3.0. The real difference is only 0.1.

Hana: Nok’s right. Dr. Okafor will notice that right away.

Leo: Ugh, fine. Starting from zero.

Part 3 · Read an Academic Passage (5 items)

Part 3A · Correlation Is Not Causation

This passage is from Nok’s Research Methods 250 textbook. Read it and answer the questions.

One of the first lessons in any statistics course is that correlation does not imply causation. When two things tend to rise and fall together, it is tempting to assume that one causes the other. Often, however, the relationship has another explanation.

Consider a well-known example: ice cream sales and drowning deaths both increase in the summer. Ice cream does not cause drowning. Instead, a third factor, hot weather, leads both to more ice cream eating and to more swimming. Statisticians call such a hidden factor a confounding variable.

Sometimes the direction of cause is unclear. Students who use the library often may have higher grades, but it may be that motivated students both use the library and earn good grades, rather than library visits themselves raising grades.

Some correlations are simply coincidences. With enough data, researchers can find strange connections between things that have nothing to do with each other.

To establish causation, scientists usually rely on controlled experiments in which participants are randomly assigned to different conditions. Random assignment helps ensure that any differences between groups are caused by the treatment rather than by hidden factors.
