Lesson 6: Ordering Food at a Restaurant
This lesson focuses on phrases and expressions used when ordering food at a restaurant. You’ll learn how to order politely, ask about ingredients, and make specific requests to customize your meal.
Tutorial
To start an order at a restaurant, you might first ask for a menu or let the server know when you’re ready to order. Here are some common phrases:
- Could I see the menu, please?
- Do you have any specials today?
- I’d like to order now, please.
- Could you recommend something popular?
- What would you suggest for [meal preference, e.g., something light or vegetarian]?
When making your order, you might use the following expressions:
- I’ll have the [dish name]: e.g., “I’ll have the Caesar salad.”
- Could I get [dish name] without [ingredient]?: e.g., “Could I get the pasta without cheese?”
- Can I add [ingredient] to my meal?
- Is it possible to make this dish [modification, e.g., gluten-free]?
- I’d like my [dish] with [specific request, e.g., dressing on the side]
To ask about ingredients, cooking methods, or dietary restrictions, use these phrases:
- What’s in the [dish]?
- Is this dish [allergy-friendly, e.g., dairy-free or nut-free]?
- How is this dish prepared?
- Does this contain any [specific ingredient, e.g., garlic]?
When you’re finished with your meal, you can ask for the bill and thank your server:
- Could I have the check, please?
- Thank you! The meal was wonderful.
- I’ll pay by [payment method, e.g., card or cash]
Sample Conversation
Server: Good evening! Welcome to Green Leaf Bistro. Here’s the menu. Would you like to hear our specials?
Customer: Yes, please!
Server: Tonight, we have a grilled salmon with a lemon herb sauce and a vegetarian pasta with fresh seasonal vegetables.
Customer: That sounds good! I’ll have the grilled salmon, but could I have the sauce on the side?
Server: Absolutely. Would you like a side dish with that?
Customer: Yes, I’d like a side salad, please. Also, could you tell me if the salad dressing has dairy in it?
Server: It doesn’t, but I can also bring it on the side if you prefer.
