In this lesson, you’ll learn how to share experiences and tell stories. This is a valuable skill for making connections with others by sharing memorable or funny moments in a clear and engaging way.

Here are some key phrases for starting a story:

  • A while ago, I…: e.g., “A while ago, I had the chance to try skydiving.”
  • Have you ever heard about the time I…: e.g., “Have you ever heard about the time I got lost in the city?”

To add detail and build the story, use phrases like:

  • First,…; Then,…; After that,…; Finally,…: e.g., “First, we set up the tent. Then, it started raining. After that, we had to find shelter, and finally, the storm passed.”
  • It was so [adjective]: e.g., “It was so exciting!” or “It was so scary!”
  • Just when we thought…: e.g., “Just when we thought it was over, we heard a strange noise.”
  • Luckily,… or Unfortunately,…: e.g., “Luckily, we found our way back,” or “Unfortunately, we missed the last bus.”

To respond to others’ stories, try these phrases:

  • Wow, that’s amazing!
  • Oh no, what happened next?
  • That sounds [adjective]: e.g., “That sounds incredible!” or “That sounds terrifying.”
  • I can’t believe that happened!
