Speaking Module 15: Shopping and Making Purchases

This module teaches learners key phrases for shopping, asking questions about items, and managing transactions in English-speaking environments.

1. Asking About Items

“Do you have this in a different size?”

Used to inquire about size options. Example: “Do you have this in a medium?”

“Is this available in another color?”

Asks about color options for an item.

“Can I try this on?”

Used in clothing stores to request trying items in a fitting room.

“What material is this made of?”

Inquires about the composition of an item. Example: “What material is this jacket made of?”

2. Asking About Prices and Deals

“How much does this cost?”

A standard way to ask about an item’s price. Example: “How much does this phone cost?”

“Is this on sale?”

Asks if there is a discount on an item.

“Are there any promotions right now?”

Inquires about current deals or offers.

“Do you price match?”

Asks if the store matches competitors’ prices for the same item.

3. Making a Purchase

“I’ll take this, please.”

Indicates a decision to buy an item.

“Can I pay by card?”

Asks if card payment is accepted.

“Do you offer gift wrapping?”

Requests gift-wrapping services for purchased items.

“Could I get a receipt, please?”

Politely asks for a receipt.

Did you know?

In English-speaking countries, politeness is key in shopping interactions. Saying “please” and “thank you” is common, and it’s perfectly normal to ask questions about an item before making a purchase. Bargaining is not typical in many stores but might be acceptable in markets or small shops.
