Lesson 7: Talking About Family

Talking about family is a great way to connect with others and share personal stories. In this lesson, you’ll learn vocabulary for family relationships, phrases for describing family members, and ways to discuss your family in English.

Tutorial

Here is some basic family vocabulary:

  • Immediate Family: mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter
  • Extended Family: grandmother, grandfather, aunt, uncle, cousin, niece, nephew
  • In-Laws: mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law
  • Stepfamily: stepmother, stepfather, stepsister, stepbrother

When describing family members, you can use phrases like:

  • My [family member] is [adjective]: e.g., “My sister is very friendly.”
  • I have [number] siblings: e.g., “I have two brothers and one sister.”
  • We’re a close family: This means you have a strong relationship with your family.
  • My [family member] works as a [profession]: e.g., “My father works as a teacher.”
  • We live [location]: e.g., “We live in the same town.”

To ask about someone else’s family, you can use questions like:

  • Do you have any siblings?
  • What does your [family member] do?
  • Are you close to your family?
  • Where does your family live?

Sample Conversation

Person A: So, do you have any siblings?

Person B: Yes, I have an older sister and a younger brother. What about you?

Person A: I’m an only child, actually! But I’m really close to my cousins. Do you live near your family?

Person B: Yes, we all live in the same city. My sister and I are especially close.

Person A: That’s nice! What does your sister do?

Person B: She’s a nurse. She loves her job! How about your parents?

Person A: My mom works in finance, and my dad is a professor. We’re all pretty close even though we live in different cities now.
