Speaking Module 20: Making Compliments and Responding to Them

This module helps learners confidently give compliments and respond appropriately, enhancing social communication skills.

1. Making Compliments About Appearance

“You look great today!”

A simple and friendly compliment. Example: “You look great today! Did you get a new haircut?”

“I love your [specific item].”

Focuses on a specific part of someone’s appearance. Example: “I love your dress! It’s so stylish.”

“That color looks amazing on you.”

Highlights how a color complements someone. Example: “That blue shirt looks amazing on you.”

2. Complimenting Skills or Talents

“You’re really good at [skill].”

Recognizes a specific talent. Example: “You’re really good at painting. Your artwork is stunning.”

“I’m impressed by your [ability].”

A formal way to acknowledge someone’s skill. Example: “I’m impressed by your ability to explain complex topics clearly.”

“You have a real talent for [something].”

Highlights natural ability. Example: “You have a real talent for making people feel comfortable.”

3. Complimenting Personality or Actions

“You have such a positive attitude.”

Praises someone’s outlook. Example: “You have such a positive attitude. It’s inspiring!”

“You’re so thoughtful!”

Acknowledges someone’s kindness. Example: “You’re so thoughtful for bringing me coffee this morning.”

“You always know the right thing to say.”

Highlights emotional intelligence. Example: “You always know the right thing to say to cheer people up.”

4. Responding to Compliments

“Thank you! That means a lot to me.”

Expresses appreciation for the compliment.

“Thanks! I’m glad you noticed.”

A casual and friendly response. Example: “Thanks! I’m glad you noticed the effort I put into the presentation.”

“That’s very kind of you to say.”

A formal and polite reply. Example: “That’s very kind of you to say. Thank you so much!”
